The Autonomous Section of Theory and History is an academic structure coordinating the scientific areas of Theory and Criticism of Art, Theory and Criticism of Architecture, Theater Theory and Criticism, History of Art, History of Architecture and Social Sciences and their respective curricular units , which develops a close scientific-pedagogical articulation with the courses that integrate it.

Among other responsibilities, SATH is responsible for organizing and developing research in its scientific areas, promoting research groups and projects, in addition to individual research, as well as supporting the activities and initiatives of faculty and researchers in the field of research.

Currently, SATH shares with the other departments of ESAP a research policy that goes through two types of actions:

1. The encouragement of the formation of research teams led by professors from SATH, through the funding of short-term collective research projects, ie ESAP Projects.

2. Raising students' awareness of the research, through the provision of Credit Research Internships (ECI) carried out in the context of ongoing projects.

There are currently three research projects in SATH, one of which is related to the Degree in Visual Arts - Photography:

The Department of Visual Arts is an academic structure coordinating the scientific areas of Design, Photography, Printing, Plastic Arts, Design, Information and Communication Technologies, Multimedia and its respective curricular units, which develops a close scientific-pedagogical articulation with the courses that integrate it.

Among other competences, it is the responsibility of the DAV to organize and develop research in its scientific areas, by promoting research groups and projects, in addition to individual research, as well as supporting the activities and initiatives of faculty and researchers in the field of research.

DAV shares with the other departments of the ESAP a research policy that includes the encouragement of the formation of research teams led by DAV professors through the funding of short-term collective research projects, namely ESAP projects.

The provision of Research Creation Internships (ECI) in the context of projects underway in the Department is also intended to contribute to the initiation or reinforcement of the scientific initiation of ESAP students.

Arnaldo Araújo Research Center (CEAA) of the Escola Superior Artística do Porto is a research unit recognized by FCT (uID 4041) that develops research in the area of ​​Artistic Studies, concretely in the territories of Theory, Criticism and History.

At present, CEAA is organized into three research groups and one research line

The Group of Art and Critical Studies, in which the investigation associated with the visual arts is mainly inserted, is directed by Eduarda Neves and conducts research in three major thematic areas, linked to the Degree in Visual Arts - Photography:
